Phat Boi Studio is the name I am going to use to publish my role-playing games in. It is named after my beloved guinea pig, Phat Boi, who inspired my logo.
Phat Boi studios currently has two role-playing settings lined up for publication. The first is Aeries of Aonia™ for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition 2025. The second is Dinosaur America™ which uses a simplified version of the d100 Open Quest system. All will be published under the ORC license.
Aeries of Aonia
Aeries of Aonia™ is a fantasy role playing setting I have been working on for at least a decade. It is based on a world where the callous Aos once ruled. The rulers of the Aos used magic to mutate their faerie kin and to merge men and beasts to create slaves and warriors for their armies. Eventually a curse infected the Aos and they found themselves to be losing their immortality and beginning to age and die. They opened up many portals to other planes in an attempt to flee the curse and eventually fled to what became the land of Faerie.
But the portals remained and many other creatures came through from other worlds and planes to inhabit Aonia. Among these worlds was a place where the dinosaurs never became extinct and our own world allowing many human cultures to migrate to Aonia and mix with the native lifeforms. Among the last creatures that came from the portals were the shrouds.
The shrouds were a levitating species of slime mold that would fasten itself parasitically onto other animals or people, inserting tendrils into the brain and controlling them to attack others and spread the contamination. These shroud zombies were devastating to the peoples of Aonia who soon grouped together in isolated villages to ward off the monsters.
Eventually it was discovered that a native form of lesser dragon could be bonded with and these dragon riders founded the Aeries. The Aeries are dedicated to destroying the aerial menace before it can harm the people on the ground using breath, magic, and their rider's abilities to conquer the aerial menace.
The above is a quick summary of the history of Aonia and it is assumed that a PC party will be a dragon rider and his crew of assistants. The main inspirations for the setting are:
Bertin, Joanne: Dragonlord.
Lackey, Mercedes: the Dragon Jousters series.
Lockwood, Todd: The Summer Dragon.
McCaffrey, Anne: The Dragonriders of Pern series.
Miller, Carl: Dragonbound and the rest of the books in that series.
Norton, Andre: The Witch World series of which The Gryphon Trilogy and The Key to the Keplian were especially inspirational.
Novik, Naomi: the Temeraire series.
Paolini, Christopher: Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance Trilogy.
Pierce, Meridith Ann: The Firebringer Trilogy.
Salsitz, R.A: Where Dragons Lie Trilogy.
Among others.
Dinosaur America
![]() |
Dinosaur America ™ is an Alternate History/Speculative Zoology setting on an Earth where the meteor that killed off the dinosaurs missed the Gulf of Mexico and struck the Indian Ocean instead. As a result dinosaurs survived in the Americas and attempts by the old-world colonists to conquer the Native Americans has been slowed due to the dangerous wildlife of the new world.
Set in an alternate 1866 with a smaller United States and more expansive Native countries, including a still thriving Aztec and Adena cultures and an invading force of reptilian sentient beings from the south. The default area will be the Texas Territory (not yet a state) which is hoping to expand the influence of the United States into the surrounding cultures.
This dinosaur western will be brought to life using the Open Quest system and was primarily inspired by the following media:
Books & Comics:
Davis, Brett: Bone Wars.
Giambastiani. Kurt R.A: The Year the Cloud Fell and the rest of that series.
Goodman Games: Dinosaur Planet: Broncosaurus Rex
Keenan, Shaun: Dinosaurs of the Wild West
Resnick, Mike: Dragon America
Western Publishing (Dell Comics): Turok: Son of Stone
Movies:
The Beast of Hollow Mountain, 1956
The Valley of Gwangi, 1969
